Canyon puts hickory's contrast on full display, blond sapwood next to deep brown heartwood within one board, grain lines reading thick and uneven rather than fine, and its warm, sun-baked color pushes that contrast further rather than smoothing it into one even tone. Shaw runs a hand-scraping pass across this Sequoia plank at 6.38 inches wide, layering artisan texture over the pale-to-dark swings hickory is known for. The character grade lands at High too, so knots and streaking appear across enough boards that the floor reads as genuinely rustic rather than lightly rustic-inspired, and Shaw's Repel water-resistant topcoat at 20% gloss gives Canyon's contrast even more depth than a fully matte finish would.

Knee walls and dormers chop up an attic's floor space more than almost any other room in a house. Pale birch cabinetry, an unbleached linen wall, stainless surfaces and rose brass hardware give Canyon's bold hickory grain room to read as a feature rather than clutter in that already busy, angled space.
