Hickory's heartwood and sapwood rarely blend quietly, and Pacific Crest doesn't try to force the issue on the Sequoia line. The stain leans toward a cool, mountain-grey depth, but the underlying grain still jumps from light to dark the way hickory always does, so the color reads as an overlay rather than a disguise. The High character rating backs that up: nothing here gets sanded away quietly, not the knots, the mineral color, or the sapwood, all present across this Shaw engineered hardwood. Hand-scraping adds its own texture on top, an uneven, faceted surface that catches light differently depending on the angle it's viewed from. A 20% gloss keeps all of it soft rather than shiny.

A south-facing sitting room gets strong, direct sun for a good part of the day, which is a real test for any finish. Pacific Crest handles it well against charcoal slab cabinetry, a faded denim wall, marble-look quartz surfaces and antique copper hardware. At 20%, the Sequoia line sits between a flat matte and a noticeably shiny finish, scattering strong sunlight instead of bouncing it back as hard glare across the room. That middle ground also keeps daily wear from standing out under such direct exposure. It's an easier floor to live with in direct sun.
