Hickory's naturally dramatic grain, prone to swinging from light to dark within a single board, becomes even more visible once that scraped surface catches shadow across the ridges. Mesquite pushes the tone dark, and with high character grading, knots and mineral streaking surface strongly against that darker base rather than blending into it. At 20% gloss, light does not skim flatly across the floor the way it would on a smooth, higher-sheen surface; instead it breaks across the scraped texture and the grain's own swings, giving the floor a depth a flatter finish would not produce.
