Commercial Carpet Tiles

Commercial Carpet Tiles

4.92 / 5 stars, 13 reviews

Commercial carpet tiles or modular carpets are square or rectangular pieces designed for business and commercial office areas. They’re often used in office buildings, retail stores, and hotels, but they can also be used in residential spaces.

Commercial Grade Carpets

Main Street commercial floor carpet tiles vary in size but are generally in 24" x 24" or 19.7" x 19.7" squares. Common carpet colors are brown, gray, black, or a mixture of all colors to help hide normal wear and tear. Carpet tiles can withstand heavy foot traffic and are resistant to common stains such as dirt. Other popular brands: Mannington on Main, Mohawk Group, Shaw Contract

Advantages of Commercial Carpet Squares

Easy Installation

Carpet tiles are easy to install and repair and require less maintenance than roll carpets. They can be installed quickly by professionals or even skilled DIYers, especially those with interlocking edges and adhesive backing.

Great Design Flexibility

These tiles offer greater versatility than traditional carpeting. They come in various colors, patterns, and textures, giving you endless design possibilities. You can mix and match colors and patterns that fit your space’s style and decor.

Easy Replacement

Carpet tiles are easy to replace—if one tile gets heavily stained or damaged, simply replace that tile without having to remove the entire carpeted area. This gives it a significant advantage over the broadloom carpets.

Improved Durability

Carpet tiles have better durability because of their construction. Their modular design allows for better wear-and-tear resistance, especially in high-traffic areas.

Carpet Tile Cost

The cost per square foot ranges from $13.50 to over $27.00 per yard. This calculates out to be $1.50 to $3 per square foot.

Cheap, off-brand carpet tiles, though inexpensive, run the risk of being low quality. Look for reviews of the carpet you plan on buying so you know what to expect.

Carpet Installation and Maintenance

Installation

Though carpet tiles are easier to install than wall-to-wall carpet, you may need to follow certain steps to ensure a smooth, clean, and beautiful installation. Along with the necessary tools and the correct amount of tiles and adhesive or tile glue, take note of the following:

  1. Prep the area: The subfloor must be clean, dry, and debris-free before installation. Any uneven areas or cracks should be filled and leveled. Order your tiles by dividing the square footage of the room by the measurement of one tile to know how many tiles are needed then add 10% for future repairs.

  2. Mark and start at the center of the room: Starting from the center of your space is the best way to ensure consistent installation once you reach the walls. Mark the center by measuring an equal distance from both ends of the room. Lay out your carpet tiles without adhesives until you reach your walls, considering the pattern you want your flooring to have and the proper spacing of the room. Some adjustments of the center point and the tiles may be needed to ensure spaces near walls can fill at least half a tile.

  3. Place the tiles: Once you’re satisfied with the placement of your tiles, start installing your tiles. With peel-and-stick carpet tiles, after removing the plastic or paper film covering the adhesive, gently place the tile on the floor and adjust, then press the tile in place.

With carpet tiles that need adhesive, ensure you spread enough adhesive on the floor for two to three tiles at a time. Place the tile lightly on the adhesive and ensure you don’t get any on the carpeted side. Once you’re satisfied with its placement, press the tile in place.

  1. Cut tiles along walls: Once you’ve placed most of the tiles in place, cut tiles to fill in gaps between the tiles and the walls. Measure the gap and cut the tiles accordingly, and install them as you did with the previous tiles.

  2. Secure tiles in place: Use a carpet roller to ensure the tiles are firmly in place.

Maintenance

Once you’ve installed your tiles, follow these tips to maintain their appearance and performance for years:

  • Vacuum regularly, especially in high-traffic areas.

  • Use protective mats or runners in high-traffic areas.

  • Clean up spills immediately.

  • Use spot cleaners for stubborn stains.

  • Deep-clean carpet every 8–12 months.

  • Use plywood when moving furniture on the tiles.
