Hand-scraping this maple board leaves a rolling, irregular surface rather than the dead-flat plane the species would otherwise take, and because maple's grain is fine and uniform, the scraping shows up as gentle waves instead of catching on grain lines the way it would on a coarser wood. That even grain is also why maple can take stain unevenly, so Shaw's Windsurf colorway in the Coral Springs collection leans on a lighter, controlled tone. With a pillowed edge softening every seam and 20 percent gloss, light doesn't sit still here the way it would on a flatter board, and the moderate character rating means grain variation without the knots a high-character board would carry.

Windsurf's soft, light cast makes sense in an entry and hallway run, a transitional space that often borrows cues from the kitchen beyond it, so mushroom-grey cabinetry, a wall in plaster pink and a slab of Calacatta nearby all read as one palette, with pewter hardware keeping the metals muted. At 20 percent gloss, this finish sits mid-range, low enough that it won't turn every scuff into a visible flash under morning light, but high enough to keep the hallway from feeling flat. Entries collect grit and dropped keys before anyone reaches the rest of the house, and this sheen hides the everyday dust a high-gloss floor would show within hours. Shaw built this engineered hardwood for that daily traffic.
