This Ocala board runs 5 inches wide, with individual planks stretching from 10 up to 58.5 inches, a format squarely in the middle of what residential engineered hardwood typically offers. Maple's fine, uniform grain stays quiet at this width, never fighting for attention the way a bolder-grained species would across the same face. That evenness is also why maple can absorb stain unevenly if pushed too dark, so Shaw keeps Windsurf light enough to avoid that risk entirely. A smooth surface leaves nothing but the wood's own subtle grain doing visual work, letting light travel the plank's length without a scrape or brush mark breaking the reflection. Character here reads Moderate, not High.

Windsurf's light, even cast carries well from a mudroom into an adjoining kitchen, a transition zone often finished with mushroom-grey cabinetry, walls in plaster pink and a slab of onyx on a nearby counter, where aged brass hardware adds warmth without darkening the overall palette. That transition zone is also where boots, dropped bags and daily foot traffic concentrate before reaching the rest of the house. With a 1.2 millimeter wear layer, this floor was never meant for a full sand-and-refinish job down the line. Its lifespan instead depends on screen-and-recoat upkeep and swapping out individual boards if one takes real damage near the mudroom door. Plan for wear, not restoration.
