Definition of Commercial Grade
Commercial-grade flooring is designed to withstand high levels of foot traffic as well as wear and tear.
It’s the kind of flooring found in commercial buildings like schools, hospitals, restaurants, convenience stores, and office spaces.
Commercial-grade flooring materials must be more durable and long-lasting, plus easier to clean and maintain, than residential-grade flooring.
A variety of materials, ranging from vinyl composition tile (VCT), and luxury vinyl plank (LVP), to solid hardwood, sheet vinyl, laminate, or linoleum, can be used for commercial flooring purposes.
Commercial-grade flooring material must meet certain criteria before being approved for use:
- Abrasion resistance: Flooring should be able to withstand everyday wear and tear, scratching, and denting that results from heavy foot traffic.
- Slip resistance: Commercial-grade flooring materials are textured and have increased friction and traction to prevent slip and fall injuries.
- Fire resistance: Flooring in commercial settings should be able to prevent or slow down the ignition and spread of fire.
