Shaw EPIC Engineered Hardwood
Shaw EPIC engineered hardwood features Stabilitek® core technology for improved dimensional stability and ScufResist Platinum® finish technology to help reduce visible wear from daily foot traffic. Its engineered hardwood construction uses layered wood components designed to help distribute natural wood movement across the assembly, helping the flooring maintain stability through seasonal changes.
If your home is on a concrete slab, has a basement you want to finish, sits in a humid climate, or shares space with pets, standard hardwood is often ruled out. Shaw EPIC is engineered for exactly these situations, using a stable core and durable finish to perform where ordinary hardwood may be more vulnerable to movement. If one of these challenges is holding up your project, this is the collection worth a closer look.
Customer Favorites From Shaw EPIC Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Albright Oak
Minimal color variation from plank to plank gives this finish a neutral, even quality that coordinates reliably with existing trim, cabinetry, or adjoining flooring. Because it carries no strong warm or cool bias, it works as a match rather than a contrast, useful when the floor needs to blend into an already-established palette.
Coral Springs
What sets this finish apart practically is how well its medium tone and moderate grain movement hide everyday dust and footprints between cleanings. That combination of warmth and forgiving depth is why it holds up well in main living areas that see daily traffic.
Pacific Grove
A lighter, brighter finish with visible character that varies from plank to plank more than standard oak. This finish works well in spaces where natural variation and lighter tones are desired.
Sequoia
This is the darkest finish in the collection and serves as a strong visual anchor. Dust, pet hair, and footprints show up faster on darker floors, so upkeep expectations should be set accordingly.
Understanding the Finish Types
Finish is the surface texture worked into the wood before sealing. It changes how the floor looks, how it handles daily wear, and how visible scratches and dents become over time—which matters especially in the demanding spaces where EPIC is suitable.
Smooth: A flat, even surface with no added texture. It gives the cleanest, most contemporary look and reflects light uniformly. The trade-off: with nothing to break up the surface, scratches, dents, and everyday scuffs show more readily. Smooth suits low-traffic or design-forward rooms more than a busy, pet-heavy household.
Wire-brushed: A wire brush is dragged along the grain to scrape out the softer wood, leaving the harder grain slightly raised and adding fine, linear texture. This is the workhorse finish for active homes: the texture scatters light and camouflages scratches, dents, and dust far better than smooth, so the floor keeps looking good longer. It's often the most practical choice for pets, kids, and high-traffic areas—which lines up directly with what EPIC is chosen for.
Hand-scraped: Each plank is textured to look hand-worked, with visible undulation and character across the surface. It reads as rustic, artisanal, or reclaimed, and like wire-brushing, the irregular surface hides wear well. The heavier texture is a stronger design statement, so it fits homeowners who want the floor to carry visible character rather than sit quietly.
Matte vs. higher-sheen sealing: Separate from the surface texture is the sheen of the topcoat. Lower-sheen (matte) finishes hide scratches, smudges, and dust better and look more natural; higher-sheen finishes look more polished but reveal wear and require more upkeep. For challenging environments and active households, lower sheen is usually the easier floor to live with.
Installation Methods Matched to Your Subfloor
Testing the subfloor before installation is essential, and results determine both warranty eligibility and whether installation should proceed. Wooden subfloors should test at 9–11% moisture content; concrete should test at or below 3–4 lbs/1,000 sq ft/24 hrs via calcium chloride or an equivalent method. Anything above threshold needs remediation first. This step is not optional; it reflects the industry standard for durable results.
EPIC Plus supports three installation methods, each matched to a different subfloor:
- Floating installation or click-lock connections over wooden subfloors, no adhesive, and the fastest to install. Best for stable wooden substrates, not for slabs or basements.
- Glue-down or adhesive bonding over concrete slabs or wooden subfloors. The most dimensionally stable method and the recommended approach for slab-on-grade, below-grade, and large open floor plans. It needs cure time before the room is used.
- Nail-down method: A traditional method for above-grade wooden structures only. Fasteners secure planks into a wooden subfloor over joists.
Cleaning and Care Specifications for Shaw EPIC
- Simple Standard Care & Everyday Cleaning: Sweep and dry mop, and damp mop with a wrung-out mop rather than a soaking one. Use pads for heavy sharp foot furniture, and use area rugs in high-traffic zones. For homes with pets, trim nails regularly to limit scratching.
- Basement Installations: Keep relative humidity in the 35–55% range, dehumidifying in summer and humidifying in winter, and watch for any seepage.
- Slab-on-grade Installations: Keep an eye on moisture barrier integrity and address any seepage promptly.
