As a species, maple doesn't offer much grain drama, its structure fine and uniform enough that color and texture do most of the visual work. Bison asks the hand-scraped surface to fill that gap on the Pacific Grove line, since the tooling marks create a slightly irregular, undulating face a flat-sawn board wouldn't otherwise have. Because the stain settles unevenly across that grain, this deep, earthy tone can read a shade differently from board to board, even while the Moderate character rating keeps that range fairly restrained. The 40% gloss adds real shine on top of that texture, so light catches the scraped grooves rather than skating past them. It's a warmer, textured maple from Shaw.

A converted attic is an unusual home for Bison, but its earthy depth suits the low, warm light those spaces tend to get, especially near painted olive cabinetry, an unbleached linen wall, recycled glass surfaces and unlacquered brass hardware. Attic layouts are rarely simple rectangles. Boards on the Pacific Grove line run from ten inches up to nearly five feet, which gives an installer real room to stagger long and short planks around dormers, knee walls and the odd angled cut without wasting much of this engineered hardwood. That length range turns an awkward floor plan into an asset rather than a problem. Fewer seams, more flexibility.
