Shaw keeps the surface smooth here, which keeps that contrast from turning busy, while this line carries a High grade for character, so knots and streaking show up often enough to feel like part of the floor's identity. A 7% gloss Repel finish leaves it matte and low-sheen.

Metro Brown's bold, high-contrast grain suits a formal dining room finished with smoked eucalyptus cabinetry, an off-black wall, cast stone surfaces and blackened steel hardware, a palette dark enough to hold its own against the wood's swings from light to dark. Dining rooms sometimes sit over a finished basement or a slab foundation rather than a full crawlspace. This Alpine Hickory engineered hardwood carries an Above, On, Below install rating at 3/8 inch total thickness, so it can go straight over that slab or continue down into the lower level, extending the same floor below grade without switching products.
