Definition of Warping

Warping refers to the solid wood or engineered hardwood flooring distortion that ruins the shape of the planks.

It's caused by increased levels of moisture and humidity in a space that result from changes in temperature or flooding.

Other similar forms of damage include:

  • Cupping: A type of wood distortion in which edges are raised higher than the center of the flooring. This is caused by a moisture imbalance where the backing layer is exposed to more moisture than the top layer.
  • Crowning: A form of wood damage where the center of the planks are raised higher than the edges.
