Coved rubber and vinyl wall base is one of the most popular options for wall base. Cove baseboard moldings are designed to both protect the wall and make for a sanitary environment. The footing allows the trim to have solids and liquids fall off the foot and away from the wall allowing the elements to settle in a manor that can easily be seen for the purpose of creating a more clean space.
Some bathrooms require a 6-inch cove base for sanitary purposes. Typically most retail areas, schools, offices, and public buildings will install 4-inch base. The 4.5-inch base is often used if you are trying to cover up a previous 4" installation and the extra 1/2 inch allows for the new base to cover any damage that occurs during the removal process. The 2 1/2 wall base board is great for residential or areas that get less foot traffic and the base is more intended for style and a slight addition to wall protection.
Wall base without a toe or toeless rubber/vinyl moldings is commonly used in hotels and large luxury spaces that demand a more cut and clean look. A straight base is also more commonly installed over the carpet as opposed to vinyl flooring that almost always would be used in coordination with a cove base.
One of the most common questions that people ask is what is the difference between rubber and vinyl base. Rubber vs Vinyl isn't the same with every brand but most wall base manufacturers do say that rubber wall base is more designed for industrial and heavy commercial spaces. On the flip side, a vinyl base is a better solution for light commercial or residential applications. There is also a rubber vinyl blend that can be found with brands such as the Roppe 700 Series that has properties of both materials making it an affordable yet durable finish.
Both rubber and vinyl can be used in commercial spaces but we recommend rubber if it's in the budget. Rubber can be more pliable/flexible if your needing to bend around a wall. Vinyl will still flex but may require you to cut through the material or score the back to allow for it to have the proper bending to curve around a wall or on the inside angle of the wall. Rubber has also been known to handle temperature changes as it being more flexible would be less likely to shrink or crack as opposed to vinyl which could experience shrinkage or cracking if not installed in a climate-controlled room.
Johnsonite has 4 color pallets A, B, C, and D. The color chart for A and B are for more common colors that should typically be in stock. C and D color charts are more specialty colors that either would be in stock at the mill in Ohio or actually have to be produced in about 4 weeks. Some productions can take longer or require a minimum amount of 1,000 linear feet. Please ask customer service for exact specifications and availability of a particular size and color long before the date of installation.
