Hickory is the most dramatic domestic species Shaw works with here, capable of running from ivory-pale sapwood to a dark, chocolate-toned heartwood inside a single plank. Espresso, the stain used in this Riverstone colorway, leans into that drama rather than smoothing it over, pushing the darker end of the range deeper while letting the pale sapwood punch through in contrast. Hand-scraping adds a second kind of variation on top of the color, since the texture shifts slightly from board to board. With character rated High and a 20% gloss finish, expect a floor with genuine plank-to-plank differences in tone and surface, enough sheen to look finished without smoothing over the roughness the scraping creates.

Espresso's deep contrast suits a south-facing sitting room finished with beadboard cream cabinetry along a window seat and a wall in faded denim, keeping a sun-drenched room from feeling washed out. A zinc counter, if the room includes a small bar, adds a cool industrial note against all that warmth, and rose brass hardware softens it back down. A south-facing room takes more sun and foot traffic near the windows than most rooms in a house. This engineered hardwood's 1.2 mm veneer isn't meant to survive a full sand-down, so the practical plan is periodic screening and recoating, with a full board swap in reserve for any plank that ever takes real damage.
