Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) Flooring Buyer's Guide
- Andrew Uhacz
As a business looking for a durable or scratch resistant surface, you may get confused at some industry terms. It's really not as complicated as it sounds. One good option you should strongly consider first is resilient vinyl tile, also known as vinyl composition tile or VCT flooring.
Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT)
With this flooring option, you get a mixture of limestone, a thermoplastic binder, fillers, and pigments for a highly durable floor. Using colored vinyl chips, you'll find these as solid sheets made at various thickness levels. The most common way you'll find these sold are in square shapes with plenty of customized choices on size.
Some installations require floor polish after installation to give it a smooth, shiny finish. Don't let that scare you, as VCT is a reasonably easy flooring to install. It's also very affordable with excellent durability.
Our Standard Excelon Imperial Texture is now our #1 VCT tile flooring collection here at Floor City. It's no secret why considering the customization in colors. You can choose either modern or vintage colors to suit your business's brand.
You'll find this flooring excellent for retail stores or garage floors.
Definition of VCT
VCT stands for Vinyl Composition Tile. VCT Flooring often refers to commercial grade vinyl composite tiles made of colored polyvinyl chloride (PVC) chips shaped into solid sheets in 1/8" (0.125) in. thickness or 3/32" inch using heat and pressing to form tile squares in standard sizes of 12" x 12" and 12" x 24" & special order sizes of 16" x 16" and 18" x 18" available by some manufacturers.
We define VCT as a commercial vinyl flooring material used in both general applications and your home. VCT in recent years has become more prevalent in residential homes, specifically used in basements and garages because of its durability. VCT floor tiles would be an excellent choice for large retail spaces such as department stores or school classrooms, hallways, and cafeteria spaces.

Looking for Mannington VCT?
As of June 16th, 2017, Mannington no longer offers or manufactures VCT flooring and has sold their manufacturing mill to Armstrong Commercial Flooring. Mannington has decided to focus on luxury vinyl tile flooring instead of vinyl composition tile. Although the LVT flooring cost is significantly more than VCT if you can afford luxury vinyl floors, it is easier to maintain and even more long-lasting than vinyl composite tile. Again, it's nearly 2 to 4 times the cost of standard vinyl floor tiles.
