Description
Shaw rates Summit High for character, its top grade for board-to-board variation, so expect this floor to show real personality rather than a repeating pattern. No two boards match exactly. Oak's grain runs straighter than hickory's, but at this character level, knots, mineral streaking, and sapwood still surface with real frequency across the run. Summit's own tone sits in a cool, weathered mid-grey-brown, letting the wire-brushed texture read as fine, deliberate scoring rather than random roughness. Together those two factors, an active grade and a strong texture, keep the surface from ever looking flat under changing light.
Summit works well in an apartment living space finished with glazed white cabinets and slate walls, where a soapstone counter and rose brass hardware bring in just enough contrast against the wood's cool undertone. Basements count too. This Exploration West engineered hardwood runs 3/8 inch thick and carries Shaw's full above, on, and below grade rating, which covers a ground-floor apartment built over a concrete slab as easily as an upper unit with a plywood subfloor. That below-grade approval is what makes a basement-level unit a realistic option too, not just upper floors. Few engineered floors at this thickness carry that same range of approved installations.
