Hold indoor relative humidity between 35% and 55% year-round, which minimizes the natural expansion and contraction of the wood. Some seasonal gapping is still normal and should be expected, so run a humidifier through dry heating months. Put walk-off mats at entries so grit gets caught before it reaches the floor. Place felt pads under furniture legs, wider pads under heavier pieces, and lift furniture rather than sliding it. Keep pet nails trimmed. On this plantation teak, that means knots, mineral streaking and sapwood all reading strongly, with board-to-board variation pushed about as far as Shaw's grading scale goes. Plantation teak brings its own distinct import character to that variation, a look and grain pattern that reads differently underfoot than any of Shaw's domestic oak or hickory floors. Shaw finishes this smooth-milled engineered hardwood at a 15% sheen, high enough that Maritime's tonal shifts catch a bit more light than a matte floor would, without turning glassy.

A sunlit great room can carry a lot of variation without feeling busy. Maritime's shifting tones fit naturally against sandblasted fir cabinets, charcoal matte walls, a cast stone counter and antique copper hardware, a mix already built around contrast rather than a single quiet tone. At a full half inch thick, this floor also carries an above, on or below grade rating, which covers a great room built on a slab foundation just as well as one over a raised subfloor. That range means the same floor works whether the room sits directly on grade or one level up from it.
