Description
Hickory is the boldest domestic species in Shaw's engineered hardwood lineup. Its boards can carry honeyed sapwood right beside a deep umber heartwood within the same plank, so Rattan's warm, sandy stain still lets those darker streaks show through individual pieces rather than smoothing them into one flat tone. Hand-scraping layers shallow texture on top of that, and Shaw grades the character High, meaning knotting and mineral coloring show up often enough that a full room of Pebble Hill boards never repeats itself from plank to plank. Repel's water-resistant finish keeps all of it at a quiet 7% gloss, so the texture reads as depth rather than shine.
An attic sits at one extreme of a house and a basement at the other, yet the right engineered hardwood can span both. Beadboard cream cabinets, a soft clay wall, a soapstone counter and bronze hardware furnish a converted attic that needs to handle swings between the roofline above and the room below, and Rattan's warmth fits that space well. This floor carries Shaw's broadest install rating: fine above grade, fine on a slab, and just as suitable dropped below grade into a basement, all at a 3/8 inch total build. That matters in an older house where an attic conversion sits over a finished second floor rather than open joists.
